From a culinary perspective, times are perhaps different now than they used to be – our globalized food system keeps many foods on shelves year round that used to be considered seasonal fare. Unless you shop exclusively at a farmers' market, you don't necessarily live by the seasons.

Still, there is something about warmer weather that makes fruit seem perfectly appropriate. We are in the time of year that is known as the time that all kinds of fresh fruits begin to become available.

Fruit is generally considered to be healthy fare by most nutritionally minded people. So, naturally, people often ask about what fruit is allowed on the Phase One Diet. As far as fruit is concerned, the Phase One Diet includes: grapefruit, green apples, lemons, limes, tomatoes, avocados and berries.

Many people find this to be a fairly limited answer, given the large scope of food that the word "fruit" encompasses. Why are so many fruits – many with proven health benefits – not included on the list of approved Phase one fruits? There is no question that even fruits excluded from the Phase one Diet contain great, health promoting nutrients. Most whole foods do. There is one thing that disqualifies most fruits from being included on the initial part of the diet.

The Phase one Diet is designed to fight against pathogenic fungi and yeast. Once they've proliferated inside your body, fungi crave one thing – sugar. This need for sugar often manifests itself in your cravings for sugar. The issue with most fruits on the Phase one Diet simply is the sugar content. A diet high in fruits, and subsequently high in sugar, will likely feed rather than deter a fungal infection. It doesn't negate the rest of the "good stuff" in the fruit and the potential those nutrients have to promote health, it just makes fighting pathogenic fungi off more difficult when one is beginning the diet.

The Phase Two Diet begins to incorporate more fruits into the diet. After living on Phase one for a while, pathogenic fungi will likely be under control. Different kinds of fruit can even contain anti-fungal nutrients. Just in the beginning, the inherent sugar is a large concern. We do encourage people to be aware of any symptoms that a fungal infection may be returning; if you suspect it is, revert back to the Phase one Diet with limited fruit consumption.

We always encourage people to eat more whole foods from the earth. Just in the beginning, keep fruit limited to the approved varieties listed in the Phase one Diet. As you progress, you can begin incorporating more kinds of fruit into your diet, taking advantage of the health benefits therein.
