What is Manuka Honey?

On the Kaufmann Diet, you are initial eliminating all forms of sugar and sweeteners, including honey. This is because The Kaufmann Diet is designed to eliminate pathogenic yeasts and fungi from the body, which can cause a variety of health problems. Yeast and fungi thrive on sugar, therefore, eliminating foods high in sugar goes a long way towards eliminating these parasitic organisms from your body. 

 

As you ease into Phase Two of the Kaufmann Diet and eventually the LifePhase, a small amount of sweeteners may be added back into the diet. 

 

Among those sweeteners encouraged is honey. Even though it is in high in sugar, honey does possess some remarkable health benefits. It is high in organic acids, may assist in preventing seasonal allergies, contains antioxidants, and is beneficial in the healing of wounds and ulcers. Honey has even been shown to have some anti-fungal activity, making it among the best sweeteners to use if you are going to include those in your diet. 

 

Still, honey’s use should be relegated to the Kaufmann 2 Diet.

 

One particular type of honey that stands out for its health benefits is Manuka honey. Manuka honey is a monofloral honey produced in New Zealand and Australia; the honey is made exclusively with the nectar of the Manuka tree. The honey produced via the nectar of the Manuka tree is high in certain compounds that give it medicinal properties. Specifically, Manuka honey is high in MGO (methylglyoxal), leptosperin and DHA (dihydroxyacetone).

Remember that while on the Kaufmann 2 Diet, foods rich in sugar should be consumed sparingly. If at any point symptoms return, it is advised to go on the more restrictive Kaufmann 1 Diet.
