luke-curtis Candida growth in the mouth and teeth can cause an infection called thrush and may increase risk for dental cavities. Many studies have reported that probiotic bacteria such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium can significantly reduce risk of infection with pathogenic bacteria or Candida (a fungus or yeast) in the intestinal tract. Oral probiotic supplements may also reduce risk of Candida colonization in dentures and teeth.

Karin Ishiwaka et al. A multispecies probiotic reduces oral Candida colonization in denture wearers. Journal of Prosthodontists 2014; In Press.

A double-blind Brazilian study treated the dentures of 55 patients with Candida in the oral cavity with either placebo or a probiotic mixture containing live Lactobacillus rhamnosus HS111, Lactobacillus acidophilus HS101, and Bifidobacterium bifidum. After 5 weeks treatment, viable Candida were found on the dentures of 92% of patients given placebo (23 of 25 patients) but in only 17% of the patients given the probiotic mixture (5 out of 30 patients).
